Franklin D. Roosevelt

1939 Ford Secret Service car

Official car #209, a 1939 Ford Deluxe Convertible Sedan, was recieved by the United States Secret Service from the Ford Motor Company on March 21st, 1939. It was assigned, on the same date, to the White House detail for use in Presidential Protection and remained in service until April, 1947.

This car is equipped with special hand grips on the windshied and back of front seat for the specific use of the Secret Service. It was also equipped with a large generator, wich was special at that time, to handle the additional output required by the use of the short wave radio. The right side of windshield was modified to permit it opening outward in order to facilitate the use of pistols and other weapons by the agents.

It is possible that President Roosevelt may have used this car on trips from the library or to the house or cottage.

To my personal knowlege the last official Secret Service order for this car was a follow-up on trip made by President Truman to Pohick Church on U.S. Route #1, near Gunston Hall, Virginia.
